Frequently asked
- Why does my altitude reading differ from the elevation sign at the top of the pass?
- A roadside sign marks one fixed point on the pass, which may not be exactly where you are. Barometric altitude also drifts with weather until GPS re-anchors it, and closed windows or the HVAC pressurizing the cabin can cause brief transients, which Low Pass filters out. A difference of tens of feet is normal.
- Why does the app show "GPS" or a degraded altitude state instead of a normal reading?
- Low Pass reads altitude from your iPhone's barometer first. Barometric altitude needs an iPhone with a barometer (iPhone 6 and later have one; Low Pass is built around the accuracy of iPhone 12 and later). Without a barometer, or when the barometer reading isn't trustworthy, the app falls back to GPS altitude and labels it as degraded so you know it's less precise.
- Why does ascent rate show nothing when I'm parked?
- Ascent rate shows a neutral state when the car isn't moving, since there's no climb or descent to measure while parked.
- How do I get the Low Pass tile on the CarPlay Dashboard?
-
- Open Low Pass on your iPhone and start a drive.
- Connect to CarPlay as usual.
- Switch your car's display to the Dashboard view, not the full-screen app grid.
- If the tile still doesn't appear, open iOS Settings and confirm Live Activities are enabled for Low Pass.
- What does the Driving Task CarPlay app need?
- The Driving Task app is a Low Pass Pro feature, and it also needs your car to support CarPlay apps beyond the Dashboard, since not every CarPlay-equipped car does.
- What does "Detect drives automatically" do, and how do I turn it off?
- It's an optional Settings toggle, offered after your first trip, that lets Low Pass use your location in the background so a trip can start recording without you tapping anything. With it off, Low Pass only uses your location while the app is open. Turn it off any time in Low Pass Settings, or revoke location access entirely in iOS Settings.
- How do I restore a Pro purchase?
- Use the restore option in Low Pass Settings. It re-checks your purchase with Apple directly; no purchase data passes through anyone else.
- How do I export a trip as a GPX file? (Pro)
- Open the trip and tap export. Low Pass creates the GPX file at that moment and hands it to the share sheet, so it goes wherever you send it.
- Do trips sync between my devices? What if they don't show up?
- Trip summaries and a simplified track sync through your own iCloud account. Check that iCloud is signed in on both devices and that iCloud sync hasn't failed in Low Pass Settings; if iCloud is unavailable, trips stay local to the device that recorded them until sync is available again.
- What happens with no cell signal?
- Altitude, speed, heading, and trip recording all work without cell signal, since they come from the barometer and GPS. iCloud sync, place-name lookups, and region-pack downloads need a connection and pick up again once you have one.
